FAQs About Housing

Some common questions about room selection process:

Q: Is housing guaranteed to me?
A: No- housing is not guaranteed to anyone past their first semester at USF.

Q: Where can I live next year?
If you will be a second year undergraduate student and under 21 years of age you are eligible to live in Toler Hall and Pedro Arrupe.
If you will be 21 years of age or older at any time during the next academic year as an undergraduate student you are eligible to live in Loyola Village or Pedro Arrupe.
Please note that graduate student housing will be extremely limited for the upcoming academic year.

Q: If I am given a lottery date and time does this mean I will be getting housing during the selection process?
A: No- it depends on if there is space when your date and time arrives.

Q: Can I secure a spot for myself and my roommate during the selection process if I have an earlier time than my desired roommate?
A: Yes- Students can secure a spot for themselves and their requested roommate(s). You will be able to request another person to be your roommate. You and your confirmed roommates will make up a roommate group, and each member will have the ability to select spaces.

One person in the group will be automatically designated as the group leader, and all group members will have the ability to add one other student to the group (in the case that you would like to live in a triple room).
Group Leader: you will have the ability to pass “leadership” to another student, remove members from the group, and delete the group.
Group Members: you will have the ability to leave a group if you wish.

During room selection, the only available rooms that will be displayed will be ones with numbers of open bed spaces that match the number in your confirmed group size. For example, if you have 3 people in your roommate group, you will only be shown rooms with 3 available spaces. The group member who chooses the room will be required to assign all remaining group members to a space. We strongly encourage you to talk to your future roommates before starting the room selection process because you will only have 10 minutes to assign all of your roommates. More information and steps on room selection will be attached to the March 7th time slot release email.

Q: I am planning to take fewer than 12 units next semester so I will be considered part time; can I still apply to live on campus?
A: No- you must be enrolled full time to live on campus.

Q: What  if I am graduating in December? What if I only want to live on campus for the Spring semester?
A: If you are only planning on living on campus for the Fall semester you will have to complete a full academic year application. When you are about to graduate you will need to cancel your housing application. You will not have to pay the $1,000.00 cancellation fee because of a December graduation. If you are only planning on living on campus for the Spring semester you will have to fill out the Spring 2019 application which will open in October 2018.

Q: Will I be charged the cancellation fee once I have selected a room space and later decide to cancel my room assignment?
A: Depends- If you select a bed space and cancel your application on or before April 11, you will NOT be charged the cancellation fee. If you cancel your housing after April 11, you will be charged cancellation fee.

Q: Do I have to pay a housing deposit?
A: No- Continuing students who are returning to on-campus housing are not required to pay a deposit.

Q: Can I change my room after I have selected one?
A: No- You will not be allowed to change your rooms after you selected one during the room selection process and it doesn’t matter if your roommate assigned the space for you. You will only be able to submit a room change/swap request when it opens during the summer time.

Q: I want to be an RA but I am unsure if I am going to get hired. Should I still apply for housing?
A: Yes- You will need to have an application completed anyway whether you are an RA or not to be considered for housing. Apply by the 28th of February just like any other student.

Q: I have a pending SDS request for next year; do I have to go through room selection and choose a room? Do I also get to secure a room for my roommate?
A: No- a room assignment will be made on your behalf if we receive a request from your SDS specialist before room selection starts on March 26. SDS requests only confirm housing for you and NOT any chosen roommate. If we have not received an accommodation request from SDS by the time room selection occurs you will then have to choose a room during your time slot. You still have to apply by Feb. 28th.

Q: What do I do if I do not get a room?
A: Keep in mind you will be placed on waitlist and a space will be offered to you if you are the next inline on the waitlist. In the meantime please contact off campus student services via their website.

Q: Should I still log on and select a room if I have a very late time slot?
A: Room Selection is live so people will be able to select rooms and cancel until the entire process is over on April 6. Each student is encouraged to log onto USFRooms to see room availability on or after their allotted time slot.

Q: When should I start to look for off campus housing?
A: We work through our waitlist the minute it is published and all throughout the summer and fall semester. We constantly assign people off the waitlist.
Typically you will need to anticipate a quick move-in process for an off campus apartment. You should start to look for off campus housing a month before your desired move in date. We do, however, suggest researching general information on neighborhoods, prices, roommates, etc. before you start to really search for a place. Contact off campus student support services for more information.

Q. What if I have class/work during my Time Slot?
A: Students are never encouraged to obstruct class time for any housing process. We strongly encourage you to communicate with your professor(s)/supervisor to see if you are able to log on during your room selection time. If you cannot log on during your time slot please log on as soon as you can to select a bed.

Q.  How do I know if my application was submitted successfully?
A: You will receive an automated email stating that your application was received and completed. If you do not get this email right after your application submission and are sure you finished your application please call SHaRE at 415-422-6824 or email out office at share@usfca.edu to confirm.

Q: I am currently (or will be) a law student; what are my housing options? How do I apply?
A: Law school student housing is at St Anne’s community. If you would like to apply for Law school housing, please contact the SHaRE main office as this application process is NOT the same as continuing undergraduate students.
